Children's Potato Growing Competition!
02 April 2025 16:00
At 4pm on Wednesday 2nd April, Primary school pupils from Castletown and all Primary schools within Pentland Parish, along with their parents/guardians are invited to join us at Olrig Church in Castletown to kick off our great potato growing contest!
Entry is FREE, thanks to the help, support, and generosity of Woodside Garden Centre and a couple local donors. All required materials will be provided - a HUGE thank you to all sponsors for their kindness!!
If any parents/grandparents are actively green fingered we warmly invite you to come and share in the planting process with your children. After planting we will label each bag with the child’s name and that child will be in charge of watering and tending to their own grow bags at the church just, outside the church hall, for the entirety of the grow cycle (roughly 3 months).
At the end of the competition (TBD at the end of June) we will have a harvest celebration and a family BBQ (weather permitting). We will also have the scales ready to see who wins! There will be two categories of winners:
1) the most accumulative weight of all potatoes grown, and
2) the biggest individual potato by size and then weight if necessary.
Win, lose or draw, there will also be a tasty BBQ and the children can take their bounty of potatoes home to the family!
Depending on response and feedback one final BONUS addition to the fun may be added!
To participate please fill out the online registration form. One registration per child please so we can ensure we have enough supplies for all the entrants. The registration form can be found by going to this link: https://tinyurl.com/yzhkehyz or by using the QR code on the Flyer below.
We hope to see you on the 2nd of April!
