The Guild is a movement within the Church of Scotland which invites and encourages both women and men to commit their lives to Jesus Christ and enables them to express their faith in worship, prayer, action and fellowship. The Guild's motto, which is taken from Acts 27, verse 23: is "Whose we are and Whom we serve."
For the forthcoming period 2025 - 2027, the work, worship, and focus of the Guild falls under the overall strategy of: ‘Let us build a house’. During each three year period, Guild members Scotland wide support a set of projects. Each set normally has a couple in Scotland and a couple abroad.
Members of the Pentland Parish Church of Scotland Guild held a fundraising lunch today in aid of the four Guild projects for 2025 - 2027:
The Scottish Charity Bear Necessities for Bulgaria: Working with the local minister to get a church at the centre of the large residential district of the city of Sliven. The aim is for the church to offer services for teaching, worship and prayer but in time the vision is to provide free access to health care, food for the hungry and training and support for the leadership of other churches in the district.
CrossReach - Playful Beginning: Supporting families at Sunflower Garden in Edinburgh and Daisy Chain in Glasgow which are both run by CrossReach. A child’s early years can have an impact that lasts a lifetime. The Guild’s support will ensure infants will have the best possible start in life by developing strong positive relationships between parents and children. Parents can access their counselling sessions while leaving their baby in trusted hands at a crèche.
Scottish Bible Society – Bibles for Bairns: Reading to young children helps them feel safe and loved. It builds self esteem, increases their vocabulary and fires their imagination. What the project hopes to do is to offer every baby born in Scotland a free Toddler’s Bible on their first birthday. Every birthday after that until age five a bible related gift will be sent. It is something parents will opt into if they wish their child to receive these - they won’t automatically be sent to every baby born in Scotland.
Release International - Operation Hope: Supporting the Christian community in Upper Egypt by providing practical and pastoral support. In Egypt only 10 – 12% of the population profess faith in Jesus. As a minority they face varying levels of discrimination and suffer poverty and lack of education, especially in more rural areas of Upper Egypt. Through the Guild’s support of this project multiple practical needs will be met, poverty alleviated and Christian families will be assured of their value and given opportunities to build a future.
Thanks must go to Isobel Mackay, Hazel Cairns and Isobel's grandaughter Sophie for delivering the delicious lunch, comprising main course and choice of pudding, plus tea/coffee and fancy bisuits afterwards. A sumptious feed indeed!
